Hi, I’m Alexander Pomper, I’m raising funds to help restore the Batad rice terraces

I’m an American documentary photographer who has been visiting Batad since August 2024, living alongside farmers and witnessing the rhythm of their days. I’ve been lucky enough to experience the village through the seasons, documenting the community from rice planting to harvest, and building relationships with locals who have shown me their way of life.

Beyond their beauty, the terraces sustain families, hold centuries of history, and show what’s possible when a community works with the land instead of against it.

But today, these terraces are crumbling. Seasons of drought followed by heavy typhoons wash away walls, young people leave for the cities, capitalism and climate change applies new pressures each season. Repairing even a single terrace takes skilled local workers, tools, and time - and costs about $1,000.

This October 18th, I’m organizing a benefit photo exhibition in Portland, Oregon, co-hosted with the Bayanihan Center and Kalikasan Solidarity Organization. The show will feature my long-term photography project on Batad, and all proceeds will go directly to terrace rehabilitation. After Portland, the exhibition will also travel to Manila for another public show.

My initial fundraising goal is $3,000—enough to restore three terraces and support the farmers who depend on them.
