Veteran's Historical Home Floods - Hurricane Helene
Hi Friends,
Ruskin, FL: Hurricane Helene flooded our father's historic house, displacing both our father, Dr. Arthur "Mac" Miller, an 86-year-old U.S. Army veteran and retired New College of Florida professor, and our bonus-mom, Dr. Melanie Hubbard, a professor of literature. Our father's health has declined in the past year; he struggles to walk but continues to write poetry, prose, and fight the good fight. This has been his home for the majority of his life, and he desperately wants to come home. We are asking for your help so we can make it safe for him to do so as quickly as possible.
We hope 1,000 of our fellow humans can donate $20 to help us make their home liveable again. Built 113 years ago by Captain A.P. Dickman, our great-great uncle, in Ruskin on the inlet to Tampa Bay, the house is one of only three original structures remaining from the founding of Ruskin. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and has been in our family since it was built. You can read more about the house's history and the founding of Ruskin, Florida, in the application for the National Register of Historic Places.
We are hoping a crisis team will be coming soon and that insurance will come through in a timely manner, but we could use all the help we can get in the meantime. If you know anyone willing to help demolish hurricane damage, move belongings to storage, donate, or even hopefully help start rebuilding a safe environment please share this so we can bring them back home!
