The EMS Studio Project is a group of Music Recording Technology and Audio Design (heretofore referred to as MRTAD) students attempting to improve the Electronic Music Studio (EMS) at San Diego State University. Due to various bureaucratic obstacles, lack of funding, and asbestos-tainted construction(!), the studio is in a state of disarray and disuse, and is mostly unfit for its intended purpose. MRTAD students have little options for recording music and honing their skills, so a group of students have taken it upon themselves to improve the studio in whatever way possible, so that current and future students may have a useful place to learn and practice.

There are many obstacles, one of which being funds. Audio equipment in all of its forms are expensive, as are materials for sound insulation and acoustic treatment. While we have several fundraising events planned, this will certainly not be enough to cover the costs in full.
If you are willing to provide funds (or any sort of material assistance, such as spare (functioning) audio equipment, aforementioned acoustic materials, etc.), we humbly ask for your help. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

The primary goals for this project are:

Acoustic reconstruction and treatment of all three rooms:
  • Create clouds, diffusers, panels, bass traps for treatment.
  • Replace the doors with new ones that match the insolation of the inner walls and contribute to the prevention of leakage from room to room.
  • Install inner walls that are not parallel with one another, and have thick insulation that prevents heavy leakage into other class rooms.
Equipment
  • Gobos (mobile acoustic panels)
  • Kick stands, guitar stands, racks, etc.
  • Cable tester
  • DI boxes
  • Video monitoring and PA system between rooms
  • Graphic EQ, compressor, pre-amps, saturator, delay/reverb unit. This outboard equipment is found in every professional studio, and is needed in order to provide experience with physical equipment.
  • Wider variety of microphones: Dynamic, condenser (large and small diaphragm), ribbon. A wide variety of microphones is needed to give students sufficient experience for working in studios. The microphones need not to be expensive, simply varied in physical and acoustic properties.
Storage Management, miscellaneous
  • Proper secure equipment storage
  • Proper cable management between rooms, reinforce signal flow
  • Install security camera
  • Ensure mic storage is available to all MRTAD students for free use in the EMS
  • Implement reservation system for students

This is a condensed version of a very long list. The above are only the goals of highest importance. A full list may be attached later below.
