Grace and family are struggling with managing her progressing Parkinson's disease/LBD and the burden of over $300,000 that was taken from Grace by a fraudster.
Grace has been diagnosed with Parkinson's for some years. This disease is now in its later stages and taking a toll with the limitations it places. Every day brings new and difficult challenges. On New Year's Eve she was rushed to the hospital for severe internal bleeding that resulted in a hematoma in her abdomen. Doctors indicated that this could have been a side effect of one of her medications. This recent hospital visit was near fatal. A surgery would be required to address the hematoma but the doctors are not confident she is strong enough in her present state. It has been recommended that she go on palliative care in hospital or at home.
Back in 2020, Grace was defrauded of over $300,000. This was done by someone she had known for many years in her church community. Knowing that her cognitive ability was declining, the fraudsters isolated her from family, convincing Grace to give away a large amount of money under the pretense that it was to go towards an investment. Grace sold her house and downsized. She used $307,000 of this sale to be invested. She was also able to pay off some debts. She was told by the fraudsters to invest instead of paying off a new place to live. This resulted in a mortgage that still needs to be paid back. The fraudsters told her that returns from her investment would come monthly. About $1900 was to be returned monthly “as interest” which would help pay for her new mortgage and expenses. This payment happened sporadically for about a year and then stopped. Through the entire process, when the fraudsters were asked by family for statements or documentation, family were told that those could only be sent to Grace. Despite asking, documentation was never sent to Grace or family members about the investment. Grace has expressed being distressed by this situation and often asks what is going on in regards to a solution. Grace's family is in the process of pursuing whatever forms of justice that are available, including having the fraudsters investigated and license removed. The probability of receiving actual monetary compensation from legal proceedings is low, given the financial mishandling done on the part of the fraudsters.
Her family has since been responsible for the mortgage which is a huge financial burden. This has depleted the family’s resources. This is especially difficult because Grace's new living space cannot accommodate her family living with her.
Grace currently has government help at home. This is 3 PSWs per day, 1 hour each. Her family would like to provide Grace with better care including trying things like more PSW support, physiotherapy, massages, acupuncture, and other procedures on the cutting edge of Parkinson's treatment.
All of this has been confusing and tragic. There are many expenses that have resulted from the past few years of Grace's circumstances. Costs of living and travel for each family member, Grace's medications, potential of Grace's private personal support workers, physiotherapy, massages, acupuncture etc. The family also would like to be prepared financially in the event that Grace's Parkinson's and current medical state cannot be managed.
Thank you greatly to anyone that can help out in this difficult time. We greatly appreciate any amount you can donate.
