On July 22nd the world lost a bright light.  Michael Mandell was large in stature, but his heart was larger than his body was.  His generosity stretched wider, his infectious laugh was bigger, and his warmth covered every inch of space he entered.  His talent could not be contained.  Michael was a gentle giant.  He always  called at the perfect time, kept our secrets, and held our dreams close as if they were his own.  

Michael was hospitalized in February, then released to a rehab center in March.  Michael worked very hard to regain his mobility so he could go home.  He did just that and went home at the end of May.  He was slowly figuring it out.  He had several falls, but was always able to begin again.  Michael was resilient.  In the end, the Medical Examiner concluded Michael died of natural causes—most likely he had a heart attack.  Michael was cremated on August 4, 2020.

This campaign is to raise money for Michael’s final expenses.  The funds will go directly to Michael’s only cousin and last living relative Michelle Ali.  As his beneficiary, she will finalize all of Michael's affairs.  If you knew Michael, you have heard about Michelle.  They grew up together.  They would both declare, "we are more than cousins, we are brother and sister".   Michelle will receive all of the condolences written here but you are also welcome to write her directly at [email redacted].

Thank you for loving Michael.  He loved us all so well—we all thought we were his best and closest friend.  Thank you also for helping Michelle close out Michael's estate without financial anxiety.  

There will be a virtual memorial mid October.  We will email the exact date.  We look forward to celebrating our friend, sharing stories, and saying a final goodbye to our dear Michael.
