My name is Dan Chavez and after a career in the Federal Sector I am pursuing my 2nd act as a photographer, photo-journalist and volunteering as a teacher to provide educational opportunities to underserved children. I believe each of us has an obligation to try and make the world a better place for all children by providing skills, training and insight that expands their horizons and provides opportunities to level their playing field and increase their chances for self-sufficiency and success.
Since the summer of 2013 I have had the opportunity to volunteer at RESPLANDOR INTERNATIONAL near Guanajuato Mexico teaching a one week digital photography class to teenagers. Resplandor, founded by a University of Arizona professor, is a non-profit (IRS Section 501(c) (3), Tax ID #27-0830643) humanitarian organization located in a rural area and it is dedicated to empowering the community to develop its human potential and to improve their quality of life through education. The course I teach shows teens the basics of digital photography, i.e., cropping, rules of composition, adjusting tonal contrast, color, luminosity etc. It course also improves their confidence and self-esteem as they learn, practice and master the various techniques to produce their final project.
The class is taught using a variety of donated used cameras some of which need replacement. I would like to surprise the students and purchase 15 new Canon Powershot ELPH 160’s point and shoot cameras. Using the same camera with the same dials, features and settings will make the class productive. The camera is currently bundled with case and memory card at only $99.00, regular price $154.00, for a savings of $55.00 per camera. The 15 cameras, at this special pricing come to $1485.00. Funds raised in excess of the amount needed would be used to purchase camera batteries and photography books for Resplandor’s new library.
