My name is ReShan and my mother's name is Hattie Danley, but we affectionately refer to her as Memaw. She turned 84 years old this past March. In June of this year the decision was made to move her from her retirement community in Amarillo, TX, where she had lived for the past 10 years, to live with me in Miami, AZ. It had become increasingly difficult for Memaw to live independently. Mobility issues, a cancer diagnosis, increased cost of living, non-existent social services, inability to manage finances, and struggles with her medication regimen all began to slowly decrease her quality of life. I was desperately trying to help her maintain her independence, but living two states away made the task almost impossible. I had exhausted all my PTO, used any available time off to make trips home as often as possible, but it clearly was not enough. So we decided together, it was time to make the move. I used the entirety of what savings I had left, borrowed what I could, rented a truck, packed her apartment, and we made the move.

For the past couple of months, we have been working non-stop, with help from the community, on getting her Casita ready for her to move in. My main concern was making the space comfortable, safe, and easy for her to move around. But after spending this time with her, I realize there are still issues that, with the help of adaptive medical aids, would make her life so much easier. The items needed include:

All Terrain Transport Wheelchair - She has a walker for short distances, but a transport wheelchair for outings in the community is needed.

Power Lift Recliner Chair - Due to loss of muscle density and painful arthritis, her ability to lift herself out of a recliner has significantly diminished. A power lift recliner would alleviate the pain she has going from sitting to standing.

Stand Assist Rail Mobility Aids - To help assist with mobility in other areas of the house. These devices are mobile, so they could be used in the community as well.

Safety Grab Bars - These are needed throughout the Casita to maintain balance and let her safely move around the space.

I understand everyone is going through their own struggles in this world. Any help given would be greatly appreciated. My goal is for her to be safe, comfortable, be a part of the community, and have quality of life. It is important for her to stay as active as possible, but that has become impossible without adaptive equipment. She is determined to help herself.
