Research at Sea

Hello everyone! My name is Sophia Mares. I am originally from Guadalajara Mexico. I am currently a third-year student at the University of California Davis. Next year I am taking a huge challenge and doing my last semester as a Senior at Sea. I will travel with around 400 other students to visit 12 different countries. I say this is a challenge because the program costs around $30,000! Can you imagine this? I will take on this adventure. With your help and hard work, we can travel together with my stories worldwide in one year. While traveling, I will be collecting data for my senior thesis. Since I grew up in Mexico and have lived in the USA for the past four years I know that not everyone can study abroad. For that reason during my semester at sea I will write a thesis that will focus on:

the main cultural capital that underrepresented students gain when studying abroad in a program like Semester at Sea.

 

I will collect money in three different ways:

Writing my thesis at Sea will help me with my future career goals. I want to open my international school one day that gives access to global education to every single student.

During my time at Semester at sea, I will be taking four major courses that will help me get to my academic and career goals.

I will take a Comparative education class, a global perspective class, a human rights class, and a sociology class. These four classes will add to my academic life by providing me with global engagement and a global perspective.

All the money that is fundraised through this go fund me will go towards, tuition, books, and research.
