Hello family, friends and climbing community!
This past week, I was on a climbing trip in El Potrero Chico, Mexico, when I stumbled across the sweetest, four-legged local. Behind our campground, Rancho El Sendero, a gentle, loving black lab greeted us on our daily walk to the canyon. I affectionately named him Pancho after "Pancho and Lefty."
I learned from locals that he had been neglected and abandoned by a neighboring family after breaking free from the chain he was tied to 24/7 in their yard. Even though he quickly returned home, his owners refused to take him back or care for him. He had been living as a stray for several months.
By the time we found him, he was severely malnourished, suffering from multiple infections and limping due to an injured front leg. Without immediate intervention, he likely wouldn't live much longer.
Thanks to a dedicated and benevolent climbing community, we were able to bring Pancho back to the campground and care for him while devising a plan to rescue him. Dottie Cross of Fiona Animal Refuge provided us with pet supplies, travel documents and immediate veterinary care. The climbers at Sendero showered Pancho with love, care and lots of dog food. Two climbers, Josh and Jason, tag-teamed to drive Pancho to the US. I'll be picking him up on Wednesday and bringing him home to his new life in Nashville, TN.
While the worst of Pancho's life is over, he's got a long road ahead of him. He'll need extensive veterinary care to recover from his infections and injuries, as well as vaccines, diagnostic testing and a neuter surgery. I've compiled a list of his initial medical costs upon arriving in Nashville. If every test and treatment is on the absolute low end cost-wise, his initial medical care will cost a minimum of $1093. Depending on many factors, it can steeply increase from there.
It took a village to get Pancho to the US, and it's going to take a village to get him healthy. As a recent college grad and gigging musician, this is a huge financial undertaking for me to take on alone... but the alternative to rescuing Pancho was grim and unbearable. So, I'm calling on this incredible, devoted community to help once again.
If you have already been a part of Pancho's journey, I cannot thank you enough. If you are able to help by donating or sharing this page, I'd be endlessly grateful. You'd be helping to save a truly beautiful canine soul. In the event that the donations succeed Pancho's immediate financial needs, I will donate the remaining funds to Fiona's Animal Refuge so Dottie can save more dogs in need.
Much love,
Ally Lubera and Pancho the Potrero Pup
