Forever home & medical care for a Rescued Dog

Donation protected
Instead of being put down by an abusive owner, we intervened and are looking to rehabilitate and find her a forever home.
100% of all funds collected (after gofundme fees) will go towards medical treatment and living supplies. All extra money will be left on the account with the veterinarian (Riser Animal Hospital) for ongoing care.

-------------------- HISTORY --------------------
While I was at Riser Animal Hospital to pick up medicine for my cat (Thu 10/21), the vet tech shared that a dog was going to be euthanized the next day (Fri). When I asked why, she explained some of the complications in the laws around "aggressive" animals and how owners could lie and have their dogs put down. As an animal lover, I immediately offered to take the dog sight unseen if the owner was willing.

The next morning, the vet tech called with news that the owner would relinquish Baby to me. When I spoke with the owner, she told me that the dog wouldn't let her in her bedroom, would attack her when it was feeding time, and was aggressive to her and couldn't take it anymore. However, after asking more questions and speaking with her adult son, he told me that she would "spank" the dog, put a muzzle on her, withhold food, and isolate her in a bathroom if she didn't like how Baby was behaving. He also reported that his mother was aging and was the only person that Baby-the-Dog would be defensive with. Apparently, the dog loves/trusts him and is scared of storms/loud noises.

This woman inherited Baby-the-Dog from her recently deceased boyfriend and didn't know how or want to take care of her. She told me that she wants "her gone today" and would keep the euthanization appointment if I didn't pick her up on her timeline. So I scrambled and went to pick her up.

I have been a volunteer, foster, behavioral assessor, and trainer for dog rescues for over a decade. A truly aggressive dog will usually attack anyone for any reason. This dog is NOT aggressive - she is anything but aggressive. She is shy, fearful, and wants to be inside.

For the reasons above, Baby-the-Dog is wary of women. When I arrived at the owner's house, she was crying and led me to the gated driveway where baby was sitting with the adult son. Baby-the-Dog was docile, shy, and clearly afraid. She was affectionate to the adult son and grandchildren present. With the exception of the adult son, this home is chaotic with people I observed to be unaware of their behavior or surroundings. Unfortunately, the adult son has a difficult living situation and can't house her either. So, the owner signed the relinquishment form, the son carried Baby to my car, and I left.

(Yes, I cried when I got home. Baby was hurting)

While I appreciate that the (now former) owner is in mourning and clearly does not have the same formal education or socio-economic privileges as many of us have to manage the stress in her life, my mouth was bleeding from the things I wanted to say to her about how yelling, hitting, withholding food, and isolating is not a healthy way to train a dog, let alone children. She was prepared to have this innocent dog killed to satisfy a desire for convenience. That's all I will say about that.

For now, she is staying with a friend until 10/31. We really need to find her another calm, quiet, animal-child free home where she can decompress and I can rehabilitate her.

Having shared this story, please know that your donation for Baby-the-dog's improved health and well-being will be gratefully appreciated.

Please be a force multiplier for us - help us find a forever home who will want to nurture and protect her. The rescues and shelters we contacted are full and she's best in a quiet home setting.

You can also contact me for serious adoption inquiries - there's no "fee" to adopt her, but screening and commitment to cost of care is required. Proximity to the veterinarian office is also a consideration.

If you can't donate now, please consider fostering her or share this gofundme page to help us fundraise.
