Help Rescue Encantador from Starvation and Danger

While hosting one of my retreats in Uvita Costa Rica, this starved but sweet dog came out of the jungle right into the resort, which is not only in the rainforest but on the side of a mountain, right to our breakfast table. Many dogs get abandoned in countries like CR but down on the beach & if lucky get picked up by rescues & fostered, many still looking for forever homes but at least safe & fed, & others sometimes wind up traveling in small packs but at least not alone. This pup had clearly been abandoned up on the mountain as all his ribs & even every knob on his spine were visible & he had manners, so at some point clearly belonged to someone. The staff did not tecognize him but after sending his photo to the owner of the resort I discovered he actually was "owned" by a farmer much further up the mountain. They said he had been contacted more than once to say his dog, Encantador, had been spotted down the mountain & he should come get him but he never did. It was the day before we were leaving & I was very upset & did not want to leave this dog to starve & did not even want to go to bed & leave him. He also had many areas on his body that he would scream if touched & clearly needed vet care asap. The night guard came on & I discovered he knew the owner & said he could take the dog back up the mountain on his motorbike after his shift in the morning, but I said why is he down here & why is he starved, & also he needs to see a vet asap & if the farmer can't afford food he can't afford the vet so I can pay. The guard said do not give that guy any money, he doesn't give a damn about the dog, he's been down here a while, & the guard had even seen the pup fighting raccoons for food, which would explain at least some of his injuries. There are mountain lions up there & the guard said he's seen black panthers in the area too so I didn't want to leave this dog on his own one more second. The guard came to examine the dog & saw how starved he was & even he looked surprised & sad. We asked if he could take Encantador up & say to the owner, you clearly don't want the dog, some nice lady wants to adopt him & take care of him if you can't. The night guard said he would & if the owner said ok, he would hold on to Encantador until I could return to arrange his bloodwork, vaccines, cdc paperwork etc to bring him back to US. So when he went, the owner said yeah whatever take the dog like he was an old shoe which makes me so sad but also is positive, as the night guard took him home, bathed him, fed him & dewormed him, said his nails are so worn down below the pads of his feet, probably because he's been afraid to sleep out there with all the predators and has just been walking walking walking all the time. Though the guard can't keep him he is holding on to him until I can raise the funds to get back down there & find the time to stay somewhere dog friendly nearby while going through the whole process to get him back to the US. I had been staying in the same general area of CR at one point during the pandemic with my own dog Shakti, so I already know the vet's office that can assist me with everything, including getting him microchipped which is a requirement for dogs coming into the US that they need to get BEFORE their rabies vaccine, so there are a lot of rules with even the timing of things. I do understand what I need to do & fortunately right now Encantador is safe, but the minimum wage in CR is insanely low & I know the night guard can't afford to keep him. Right now I am trying to get him to take him to the vet which I said I will pay for but it seems he works 7 days a week so even that is complicated. But I'm not going to leave this sweet abandoned baby behind to starve or be eaten by wild animals and with your help we will get him back to the US safe & sound & happy. ❤️‍
