Rescue Dog Abby's Urgent Surgery Fund

Abby (previously known as Colby), was born January 20, 2024 in rural Tennessee. Abby unfortunately was unaware of the hard road ahead of her and the twists, turns, and tragic events that lay ahead in her path.

Abby was born into a family that boarded animals, but for all the wrong reasons. During Abby’s first year of life, it is a miracle she was rescued and brought to Tails Humane Society in Illinois.

Abby was rescued from a horrible environment where she was malnourished, abused, and caged for her entire life so far. Abby had roundworm and tapeworm; she lived in such an unhealthy place. During that time Abby became so closed off and so afraid of everything. She didn’t know how to be a dog.

On January 20, 2025 Abby was brought to Tails and began a new chapter in her life. Abby was put up for adoption, but remained at the Humane Society for months. She was adopted once and the family put her on a lead in their backyard one night and she got loose and was lost in rural Illinois for 5 days.

Abby found her way back to Tails. One day shortly after Abby’s excursion, our family decided that we were ready to adopt again. See, in November of last year, we had to put our cat Panda Bear to sleep. PB Heavy had a blood clot that got stuck in his spine. It happened so fast. Before we knew it, we had to make the unthinkable decision. Our family still has not gotten over that lovable, cuddly, adorable 20 lb. feline we called our Panda Bear.

Fast forward to the weekend before Memorial Day 2025, we decided we were ready to adopt another rescue animal. Through the dozens of dogs on just about every humane society, anti cruelty, and animal welfare rescue site I visited with locations in our area. There was this one pup I just could not get out of my mind. When I read her bio, my heart broke knowing just a small amount of what she had been through.

Seeing Abby for the first time; she was the sweetest, most timid, but adorable little pup. It broke my heart to see how traumatized she was and knew this was the dog for us. So, we took Abby home and began the healing process, for all of us.

No one could have foreseen the tragedy that was about to unfold. On Memorial Day, in the late morning my son was walking Abby. When my son bent down to pick up Abby’s poop, something startled her. Abby managed to pin herself under a car, removing her double leads. Abby ran from what scared her and from my son. He could not keep up with her.

Abby was hit by a car. The feeling, getting that phone call from the municipality while I was out looking for her. I still haven’t been able to catch my breath.

Abby will need surgery for both an internal bleed that is in her abdomen and on her left hind leg. Abby is so tough, she is stable but still needs care.

In all that Abby has been through, she is a fighter and has fought through a lot. But she still has a long way to go.

We cannot fathom giving up on Abby, she has fought for so long to find a home with love. Between losing our cat Panda Bear last year, and now on the verge of losing Abby. We are in a financially and emotionally dire place, anything anyone could possibly do to help and if you cannot help financially, we thank you for reading about us and ask you to send positive energy out into the universe for Abby through prayer or just good thoughts.
