Rescue Axel Roos: A New Life for a Neglected Kangaroo

If you've followed me in rescue then you know that when I see an animal being treated bad, everything stops and rescue gets to work, I get to work!

This is one of the worst situations for an animal I've seen in some time and that says a lot having been in rescue over 10 years now, dealing with some of the worst of the worst.

Behind the scenes I've been working over the last two years on a kangaroo in need of rescue with no resolve... but we FINALLY got an opportunity to rescue him and change his life.

Here's the story:

A male Kangaroo was bought by a family as a 'pet' with a mate. Soon after getting them the female escaped, was hit by a car and died. This left the male alone but to make it worse, after the death of his mate he was put into a 8' cage in a room with no windows, no sun, no grass and no hope. He has been in that same cage for over 6 YEARS! Solitary confinement for no reason. Life passing him by day by day in a cage just because of stubborn, careless, heartless humans.

The family split and he has just been there eating hay (the wrong hay) with a single bird as his only friend in his pen for over 6 years. Hardly any interaction and countless years locked away.

I've worked at this and while they thought about selling him (they would not just give him away, they don't believe in rescue), they never would. We had a breakthrough through and FINALLY they are willing to sell him to have him gone. We have to purchase him to get him out fast before they change their minds... then get to work building him an amazing enclosure he's always deserved. We already have a temp enclosure ready to go so that we can ensure his safety and decompression while the building process begins.

I've consulted with a few ROO-fessionals (Kangaroo Professionals) and they all have given their blessing that this rescue is very doable and the chance of a great life after can be a success with us at the sanctuary. I'll be in close touch with one specific that loves this plan and will be more less our Roo mentor. If you've seen how I operate you already know I like to dive in with the best and get to know every aspect of every new animal I bring in. I've also got in touch with my best vet in my arsenal to be his doc and make sure he's as healthy as possible. Try to fix any of these bad dietary disadvantages he's been dealt while caged.

This week has been nonstop calls with all authorities, state and county to make sure every aspect is legal and it is! We got the approval from the AG department, Sheriff, ODFW, Local Animal Control and every other department you could imagine. I like to be sure this is all legal and once I got the green light, you already know the foot is on the gas and we're going!

I have an entire Acre to start out ready to be fenced in with specialty made fencing and have already started a space in the barn for colder months. The barn build ended up perfect with a space to add a Kangaroo (or 2-A Mate*) living quarters. This area will be specifically built for all his needs for the rest of his life.
