For the past four years, I’ve been building Kaua'i Kō, growing heirloom sugarcane in Moloaa on Kaua'i’s north shore and pressing it into fresh cane juice for farmers markets and clients around the island. In one night Hurricane Lowell destroyed over 1000 ft of mature sugarcane rows ment to supply my markets and clients for the next 6 months.

Cane doesn’t recover from that kind of damage. Those rows have to be cleared by hand, the field has to be prepped again, and the crop has to be replanted. Because my youngest rows were largely undamaged, I’m facing about a six-month gap instead of nine to ten months, but that still means months without the harvest and sales I depend on.

I’ve already filed a crop loss claim with the USDA and I’m pursuing every state and county program I can find. This fundraiser is for the part those programs won’t cover. Four years in, I don’t have a reserve to fall back on, and I’m asking for help because the alternative is losing the ground I’ve worked so hard to build.
