Replanting Dad's tree
Donation protected
In 2013 our dad passed away suddenly, after 43 years in the army. In keeping with his wishes, we spread his ashes on the drop zone. We are arranged to have a tree planted in his memory, which led to endless frustration as we had to make all of the arrangements ourselves. On top of that, the military required that we water it ourselves, but they planted it in a field that they were using for active training... Which meant we couldn't access it half the time. Eventually, we had the tree replanted at Griesbach, the old army base where most of our lives were centered. We were assured the tree would be registered with the city, and they would maintain and protect it for 10 years. Unfortunately, the person with the military apparently never got around to it.
In the fall of 2021 we were disheartened to find out that somebody had stolen the plaque, but we were able to get a new one made and reinstalled it. But we discovered in the last couple of weeks that somebody vandalized and chopped down the tree, and attempted to remove the plaque... Post and all. My mom has contacted the city, and it turns out that because the tree was never properly registered, it will be replaced at our own expense.
The city has assured us that if we plant it through them, they will register it properly and protect this memorial.
I have had a few inquiries from people offering to contribute, so the cost does not fall entirely on my mom once again. Unfortunately these trees and the maintenance are not cheap, so I have set up this go fund me, to offset the cost of it. Please do not feel obligated to give! The love and support we have received from our army family has been more than gift enough!
