Replacing Yummy’s Stolen Bike
Donation protected
Yummy’s bike was stolen Sunday from his job at Shake Shack on the Atlanta Beltline… and he’s pretty bummed about it. I bought that bike from Atlanta Cycling - Vinings for his 20th birthday…. 2022 Trek Flex 5- Carbon Fiber. The video on this news clip is the day I bought it for him back in June when he turned 20. He has literally never asked me for anything so I thought this would be a really nice gift. I spared no expense. An expensive bike with all the bells and whistles and safety equipment. He rides this bike EVERYWHERE.
Folks on the autism spectrum thrive on structure so not only was that broken, so was his sense of independence and his sense of safety in his community. They even took the helmet and safety lights on the bike. As his mother, I’ll admit I’ve kind of kept him in a bubble because I know this world can be cruel to neurodiverse folks and that’s what’s bothering me the most about this… he doesn’t feel safe. Don’t get me wrong- if he’s in the woods fighting with a bear- help the bear. He can hold his own, but I don’t want his neurodiversity to make him a target for an issue. That bike was pretty fast and he zips home. I specifically purchased a carbon fiber bike because this summer, I planned on getting him a food trailer to start his mobile snack bar (he’s in culinary school at Schuyler Institute). People have heard about it before I even posted it and have sent positive words to Yummy.
I know you’re like… it’s just a bike. But to someone on the structure… something as simple as a bike may have someone’s whole life and way to thrive on that bike that you don’t think is a big deal.
Yummy has already been making a budget to replace his bike. If you know anything about bikes, then you know it was a pricey and quality model. This isn’t an ask for help… this is to educate the community that something as simple as a bike can be someone on the #autismspectrum security and independence. I’ve raised four children in Old Fourth Ward and while this is my community… I’m wild disappointed.
Yes I know whatever is taken will return 100 fold and it’s a set up for an upgrade... but that’s not a concept Yummy understands. And I now understand that bike insurance is a thing that I will be getting when we replace his bike.
Out of requests from the community, I started this fundraiser. Y’all love for Yummy is way bigger than my pride, and I appreciate y’all so much
