In April 2020, South Sacramento Christian Center began a free weekly food distribution program in response to the pandemic. We have also added free weekly COVID-19 testing. We serve between 150-200 families every Saturday, and have given free groceries to over 130,000 community residents since our program started. Last fall, the church purchased a large tent and security fence to allow this program to operate efficiently and safely for the residents and dozens of volunteers who staff the program, regardless of the heat or rain.
On Saturday, August 14 at approximately 11:45 p.m., someone stole a nearby large forklift and drove through our parking lot with the intention of destroying our tent. This person ran straight through the fence and completely destroyed the Food Distribution tent. He also damaged some property across the street.
Thankfully this person has already been apprehended. But the damage is total. This will be the second replacement due to vandalism since this tent was installed, and we cannot file another insurance claim. The cost of our original tent was around $40,000 plus the cost of the surrounding safety fence.
We are committed to continuing to serve our community with food, testing and other pandemic-related support. Our neighbors’ needs have not lessened in the last eighteen months; we have seen an increase in the number of cars coming every week recently and know this will continue. We are in the process of planning how to secure the entrances to our parking lot, and replace the destroyed structure with something that will last for years and resist any further vandalism.
Today, you can make a difference by donating today to South Sacramento Christian Center Church to help us replace what was lost, so we can continue to provide these vital services to our community.
