Theatre at Vis has lost one of its most vital resources: our Chevy van, affectionately nicknamed "Big Blue". Blue was stolen from the parking lot of a church in Leawood on Friday, February 27th during the group's first performance of "Stations," a traveling musical production performed each year at churches throughout the KC metro region.
"Stations" is a key part of Theatre at Vis' ministry, but it also serves as the primary funding source for the other key element: the annual youth summer musical. The summer program provides the opportunity for children and teens from across the metro to participate in a unique performance opportunity in a safe, healthy environment and to interact with other young people from across the city.
Big Blue has been a part of Theatre at Vis for many years, and while the group has intended to plan for its replacement in the next couple of years, the funding to do so has not been available. The timing of Big Blue's theft is less than ideal because not only are funds not currently available in Theatre at Vis' budget to replace the van, but the group has also committed to producing a large musical this year in celebration of its 30th anniversary. We've announced that we will perform Beauty and the Beast, which will require an additional fundraising effort in order to provide the financial resources to rent backdrops, costumes, and a large performance space.
Any contribution you are able to make to help us replace Big Blue would be greatly appreciated. We sincerely hope to be able to replace the van with the funding raised here, and still be able to raise the funding necessary to produce the musical that we've promised the kids this year. Theatre at Vis has a long history of producing high quality musicals that our community's youth can be proud of and take significant learning and relationship-building experiences from; your contribution will help us to continue that tradition in 2015, our 30th year of performance.
