Hit and Run…
Jack (17) was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was a baby. He has undergone multiple major surgeries during his 17 years to eliminate barriers specific to his disability and also give him a chance at as full a life as possible.
Unfortunately Jack was involved in a hit a run in Dundee on the 10th of May. Whilst crossing a road, he was struck by a e-bike/scooter side on, which subsequently knocked him onto the road leaving his wheelchair and Batec in a state of disrepair. This is currently under investigation by the police.
Sadly this has resulted in Jack sustaining multiple injuries including a fractured hip, which he will require surgery for in the coming days. Jack has also been left with injuries to his face, wrists and more. This is without mention to the psychological impact that this has caused. Jack is currently being well looked after by the trauma team staff in Ninewells hospital. To whom we are incredibly thankful. As this is has been extremely distressing for Jack.
Jack is 17 years old and has battled every barrier that his disability has faced him with, throughout his life, to allow him to become an independent young man who is fully integrated within his community.
This hit and run incident has caused both injury to Jack and damage to his ability to maintain this independence, which is devastating for Jack.
Along with all of Jacks injuries, his ‘legs and lifelines’ have been destroyed which is gutting for both Jack and us. Jacks wheelchair is completely unusable due to the extent of the damage. There is also extensive damage caused to his Batec, which is a motorised attachment for his wheelchair that allows Jack to travel and live his life with freedom and independence.
Jack has used a Batec for 5 years, unfortunately Jack struggles with public transport and therefore is unable to use it. This invaluable piece of kit is genuinely Jacks lifeline and his independence.
In an effort to get back to a quality of life where Jack is living independently, of course following his recovery. We have set up this page to help re-purchase his wheelchair and Batec (neither of which were initially funded by the NHS).
The wheelchair alone with specific features required to correctly suit his needs has an estimated cost of £5500. The Batec and the specific features for his needs is approximately £10000. (Awaiting specific quotes)
Having just completed his first year at Dundee & Angus College, Jack had plans on returning to college following the summer break. This will now be after a long rehabilitation period following this horrific incident.
Jack attends many sports facilities and gyms across Dundee and Angus with a keen interest in weight lifting and martial arts, Jack really does not let his disabilities dictate his limits and thrives in these environments.
We would be extremely grateful if we were able to replace Jacks ‘legs and lifelines’ as quickly as possible, in order to support and enable his recovery. With this in mind we would be incredibly grateful if you could make any contribution you can or if you can assist in any way, even liking and sharing this post on all your social media would really help massively. We will be so very appreciative of any help and any donation to allow us to help Jack and give him back what has been cruelly taken away in this awful incident.
