I'm in shock! After 23 years of song writing, playing and touring, my Martin DC1 guitar has been destroyed! It was the first time I was ever asked to gate check my soft case. I explained to the American Airlines attendant that in my 23 years of traveling with this guitar, I was never asked to gate check a guitar in a soft case. They assured me that they would keep a special eye on it. When making a transfer at DFW I retrieved my guitar at the gate and I peeked in the case, all was fine. We then made it to our connecting flight and once again I was asked to gate check. I asked why this change? Apparently the overhead doesn't accommodate for guitars anymore. "New efficient design" for carry on bags only. I trusted all would be fine. We landed but the guitar was not at the gate, they said I had to go to baggage claim. The guitar and case were there but for whatever reason, I did not look inside, everything felt fine. The guitar has been sitting in my music studio for about a month, untouched until today at band rehearsal. Mid-rehearsal I thought, "hey this song would sound a lot better on acoustic!" I reached over and unzipped the case and pulled out a guitar that Jimi Hendrix had got a hold of of. WTF! who came in here and smashed my guitar? Then it dawned on me . . . the airline bag check at the gate. What an unfortunate and costly mistake on my part. To think someone (baggage handlers) would be careful? I hope that there is someway to replace my Martin. Crossing my fingers.
