After more than 10 years of use, the laptop that carried me through fieldwork in Raja Ampat, years at Misool Eco Resort, and ultimately my PhD research has finally failed.
Over the past few weeks it has developed repeated crashes, memory failures, boot corruption, and serious hardware instability. Despite replacing components and spending days troubleshooting, it increasingly appears the motherboard itself is failing.
Unfortunately, my work depends heavily on having a reliable high-performance laptop. Much of my research involves processing large datasets from satellite-tagged manta rays, statistical analysis in R, manuscript preparation, and scientific presentations.
I recently completed my PhD on manta ray movement ecology, with multiple scientific papers now moving through publication. I am continuing this work through conservation projects, university collaborations, and marine research training in Indonesia.
This laptop supports:
- Analysis of satellite-tagging and movement ecology datasets
- Scientific writing and publication preparation
- Conservation outreach and educational materials
- Training Indonesian students and researchers
- Remote collaboration with universities and conservation organisations
- Delivering presentations during charity expeditions and outreach trips
- Data processing and development of open-source research tools
- Ongoing manta ray conservation work in Raja Ampat and eastern Indonesia
The goal of this fundraiser is to raise £1800 to replace the failing laptop with a reliable long-term workstation capable of supporting ongoing research, conservation, and education work over the coming years.
Any support, no matter the amount, is hugely appreciated and will directly help keep this work moving forward.
Thank you so much,
Calvin a.k.a. Dr Ray
