Help Restore Camp Old Indian After Hurricane Helene

In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene unleashed devastating winds and torrential rains across the Blue Ridge Council, causing extensive damage to our cherished Camp Old Indian. This historic camp has been a cornerstone for countless Cub Scouts and Scouts, fostering growth, leadership, and a deep appreciation for nature. After numerous camp visits and analysis, earlier this week we received a decision from our insurance carrier that most of the damage was not covered.

Extent of the Damage:

• Cabin Destruction: Several Adirondack cabins were completely destroyed, while others suffered severe roof damage.
• Impassable Roads and Trails: Fallen trees and debris have blocked camp roads and trails, hindering access and mobility.
• Eroded Campsites: Significant erosion has compromised the safety and usability of multiple campsites.
• Damaged Bathhouses: Essential facilities have sustained structural harm, affecting sanitation services.
• Breached Spillway: The spillway of our boating lake was breached due to rising water levels.

These damages forced the cancellation of fall and winter camping programs for both Cub Scouts and Scouts, disrupting traditions and learning experiences.

We aim to raise $68,000 immediately to do the following and in time to reopen the camp by Spring 2025:

• Rebuild and repair cabins to provide safe lodging for campers.
• Clear and restore roads and trails for accessibility.
• Address erosion to ensure campsite safety.
• Repair bathhouses to maintain essential services.
• Repair the boating lake's spillway for water-based activities.

How You Can Help:

If you are a Friends of Scouting annual donor, please consider this request as above and beyond the annual Friends of Scouting campaign. This funding raise is for unforeseen circumstances that need immediate attention and not for operations.

Your generous contribution will directly support the restoration of Camp Old Indian, ensuring that future generations of Scouts can continue to benefit from its programs. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to reopening and revitalizing this vital community resource.

Join Us in Rebuilding:

Camp Old Indian has been more than just a camp; it's a place where lifelong memories are made, and values are instilled. Your support will help us rebuild and continue our mission of nurturing the leaders of tomorrow.

Thank you for standing with us during this challenging time.

Note: All funds raised will be dedicated exclusively to repairing hurricane-related damages, reopening the camp, and refurbishing existing facilities.
