Renovations to UTM musallahs (brothers and sisters)

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

Alhamdulillah we, the Muslim Student Association at the University of Toronto Mississauga, have embarked on an important initiative to upgrade and improve our Musallah spaces to better serve our growing Muslim student community. The estimated cost for this project is around *$5,000* and our current budget unfortunately does not allow us to complete this project on our own. As this responsibility is an Amanah (trust), we are committed to complete transparency throughout every stage of the process, clearly outlining the purpose and need behind each upgrade.

The Brother’s Carpet: The current carpet, around eleven years old, has served us well, but is now in poor condition. Despite multiple efforts (including professional cleanings), it has retained an unpleasant odor. Additionally, due to limited ventilation, mold has become a recurring issue in the past year. We plan to replace the carpet and, to ensure its longevity, purchase an air purifier and a wet carpet cleaner for regular maintenance and to prevent damage.
Shoe shelving: Both prayer rooms are in need of studier, higher-capacity shoe shelves, as the current ones are flimsy and frequently fall apart. We see this as a need, especially in the sister’s room due to the narrow hallway we have, where leaving shoes on the ground has been a significant safety hazard, as we have repeatedly had people tripping on shoes.
Maintenance tools; Carpet Cleaners and Air Purifiers: To preserve the condition of our carpets in the long-term, and give the future Muslim students of this school the adequate resources to be able to do so, we aim to invest in a shared wet carpet cleaner for both rooms. As for the Air purifiers, given the limited fresh air circulation in both rooms—no windows in the brothers’ room and sealed windows in the sisters’— air purifiers are also essential to improve the air quality, especially during high-traffic times, when odors tend to really build up.
Chairs and Ottomans (Accessibility & Inclusivity): We want every student to feel welcome and supported in fulfilling their obligations. Currently, there is only one chair in the brothers’ Musallah, which has been generously used over the last couple of years. To improve accessibility, especially for those with physical challenges, we hope to provide two sturdy chairs per room. Additionally, ottomans with built-in storage will not only provide extra seating, but also help reduce clutter and enhance accessibility for wheelchair users.

As we have previously mentioned, we promise to uphold full transparency throughout this project. All transaction records will be available upon request, and we plan to document every step of progress, inshaAllah.

We’re reaching out to ask for your support . Any amount you can contribute—big or small—will make a meaningful difference. This is a unique opportunity for a Sadaqah Jariyah (a continuous charity) for you, as our prayer spaces serve over 100 students daily, and will continue to do so for years to come, by the will of Allah.

As the Prophet (SAW) said,
“مَنْ بَنَى مَسْجِدًا لِلَّهِ بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ مِثْلَهُ”
“Whoever builds a mosque (intending Allah’s pleasure), Allah will build for him a house like it in Paradise.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari 450, Sahih Muslim 533]

May Allah (SWT) reward you abundantly for your generosity and pure intention, and accept all our efforts in serving the Muslim students on campus. For any questions or inquiries, please contact [email redacted]
