Renovate Historic Burley Baseball Field

Donation protected
H3 Baseball is raising money to renovate the Historic Burley Baseball Field in Charlottesville, Virginia -- one of the oldest and most significant sports facilities in our community.

Jackson P. Burley High School opened in 1951 as a joint high school for African-American students in both Charlottesville and Albemarle County during segregation. Burley High School's last class graduated in 1967, and the school now operates as an Albemarle County middle school.

There is a baseball diamond on the land that was once part of the Burley High School football field and running track. It is the only lighted public baseball field in Albemarle County, and several community baseball teams regularly practice and play at this location.

According to Jimmy Hollins, Burley High School '65 and co-founder of the Burley Varsity Club, “We want to see this field refurbished, and we are leaving no stone unturned. ... We are asking everybody to pitch in and help. … Burley is a part and always will be a part of the city black community and the Albemarle County black community.”

We are asking for your help in raising $10,000 in "completion funds" to move the renovation project forward.

So far, H3 Baseball has raised:
$17,500 - donations and pledges earmarked for the Burley field renovation
$7,200 - in-kind donations from Allied Concrete, Falconer Construction, Bella Terra Landscapes, Martin Hardware and H3 families

In addition, the Albemarle County Public School System and the Burley Varsity Club have committed the remaining $125,000 necessary to restore the field.

Improvements will include:
1) Clearing of debris/vines from trees surrounding the ballpark
2) Complete renovation of the bleachers
3) Regrading and irrigation; re-sodding of the infield playing surface
4) Upgrading bathrooms
5) Enhanced training areas that support baseball development
6) Mural on 1st base dugout to honor Burley's athletic history

Thank you so much for supporting H3 Baseball and for helping to preserve part of our community's important history.
