Renee and Nathans Journey

Donation protected
On December 5th of 2018 Renee went in for a routine eye exam where they noticed that her optic nerves were very swollen, which lead to having a STAT MRI that same morning. That MRI showed a 7 cm tumor in the left frontal lobe of her brain.

On December 12th she went in for a craniotomy at Froedtert hospital in Milwaukee, WI after meeting with a couple different surgeons. Currently 14 weeks pregnant at this time. The surgery went okay, but the surgeon had to cut it a bit shorter due to the time she was under and blood loss. It would've been a bigger risk to the baby to continue. He didn't remove as much as we'd hoped, but enough to relieve some of the swelling on her optic nerves and other surrounding brain structures.

Renee was discharged from the ICU on December 14th. Nathan and Renee then got a call on December 19th that the doctors wanted her to come back sooner than originally planned and meet with her surgeon again and three other new doctors. These doctors included a Radiation Oncologist, a Neuro Oncologist and a new surgeon that specialized in invasive tumors of the brain.

They went back to Froedtert on December 21st. That day they found out that Renee’s tumor was in fact not a benign meningioma, which doctors thought, but a cancerous grade 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma (AA3). Due to the size and aggressive nature of this tumor she would need to start radiation treatments to the tumor as soon as possible.

Renee had another MRI on January 9th of this year that showed stability with the tumor, so they decided to wait until Renee was 25 weeks pregnant to start the treatments so it would be a little bit easier on the baby.

Thursday, March 7th was Renee’s first day of treatment. She is currently almost 27 weeks along at this point.  We all are asking for prayers that radiation works to shrink and kill this tumor and that it will stay away!

“There is no "cure" for this kind of tumor, only short term fixes and to hope and pray for a miracle that it goes away and doesn't come back.”

Renee and Nathan are not the type of people to ask for help so we thought we would bring it to them. Nathan and Renee just bought their first house together and currently have a little one on the way! During the weeks of treatment they will be staying at Kathy’s house (a nonprofit house for cancer patients.) Renee is able to come back home on the weekends, but they do live 80 miles away (and that’s just one way.) If you are unable to donate please share!
