Rena is like a sister to us. We have been the best of friends since we were teens (over 42 years). It has been the most amazing friendship. She is a beautiful, vivacious, giving, caring, loving and outgoing person. Everyone that comes in contact with Rena remembers these character traits about her. They also remember her hair. She always has a new and fun unique haircut. Sometimes her hair is pink, red or purple. She is ALWAYS smiling and making everyone laugh while looking great! If people only knew her day to day struggles. But Rena is a soldier of GOD! She always has and always will witness for Christ. Only a few of us have heard the wonderful stories about how God has worked in her life to touch the life of others and make a difference. YES! SHE IS A TRUE CHRISTIAN IN EVERY sense of the word.
Rena’s struggles began in 2007 when she had a total abdominal colectomy due to colonic inertia (her colon was removed). This made it very difficult to absorb nutrition and maintain a healthy weight.
In January 2011 the doctors discovered she had breast cancer. At this point she had a double mastectomy and complications followed. Due to necrosis (skin in surgical area not healing properly) she had 13 Hyperbaric treatments). Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or tube. Conditions treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy include serious infections, bubbles of air in your blood vessels, and wounds that won't heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury. These treatments are very expensive.
In April 2013 Rena’s breast cancer returned in the area of the mastectomy therefore causing her to undergo another double mastectomy. She contracted MRSA at the surgical site and had to be hospitalized in June 2013. Chemo therapy treatments started in June 2013 and ended in August 2014. Once that was over she started radiation treatments. After finishing radiation treatments Rena suffered from Lymphedema, nerve damage/frozen shoulder problems caused by the radiation treatments and surgical issues. Currently Rena visits a physical therapist that she has been seeing since September 2014.
In February 2015 Rena was hospitalized for pneumonia at which time a cat scan was performed and a spot/lesion was found on her lung.
Rena has a follow up scan scheduled for March 13th, 2015 to determine what this spot/lesion is on her lung. She is still suffering from extreme exhaustion; pain and loss of mobility in her arm/shoulder are caused from radiation damage and medical issues. She continues to have physical therapy 3 times a week plus daily, weekly, monthly visits to see doctors and specialist. All of the testing, scans and checkups have become financially overwhelming.
Rena's husband Craig is employed full time and is a wonderful and supportive man. Craig is a 2 time cancer survivor and recently had a knee replacement causing their income to become even more stressful.
