Hi, my name is Jordan Bateman. I am a husband, father, and barber. I consider myself to be self-sustained and don’t ask for help often because I like to be able to stand on my own two feet. Due to some health issues, we have fallen on hard times. Here is my/our story.
In February of this year I was having concerning health issues. Doctors were not taking it seriously and just kept throwing medications at me. I felt better for a time, and then worse. Then COVID-19 happened and with the shutdown, getting into a doctor’s office for an appointment became nearly impossible.
In July I had a searing pain in my mid back and ended up in the ER. They did a CT scan and found a mass inside the kidney. The nephrologist determined the kidney could not be saved, even partially, and on September 9th I had surgery to remove the entire kidney. That resulted in an overnight stay in the hospital, and two weeks off to recover. The pathology report of that kidney showed a rare type of cancer, called Renal Pelvis Cancer, and I was referred to an oncologist. The oncologist offered research and statistics, and it was decided the best course of action was to do four rounds of chemotherapy.
My wife is finishing her degree in healthcare and will graduate in December. She is currently doing her clinical rotations and it wouldn’t be lucrative for her to take on a paying job, as we have young kids that still need care.
My wife and I are between a rock and a hard place, and if this cancer had waited just 6 months we would be able to withstand the financial stress. Until she graduates, I am the financial provider for our family; all the while recovering from surgery, battling cancer, and dealing the effects of chemotherapy.
This has resulted in me reducing my hours working as a barber and has put my family into a stressful time as the bills continue to come in, and the holidays are approaching. We all find ourselves in unforeseen situations, and if you’re able to help us keep the lights on and put food on the table it will be greatly appreciated.
