Remy’s Surgery & Recovery

Hi there, I’m Sarah. If you know me you probably know my dog, Rembrandt AKA Remy.
If you know Remy, well then you probably love him.

Unfortunately, Remy got too eager chasing a ball and injured the dog equivalent of his ACL.
A trip to the vet confirmed the injury, and a surgery consultation was scheduled.

Naïvely, I did not have insurance for Remy before this incident. And as these injuries are so common in dogs, it’s almost always an exception to a new insurance policy. This won’t stop me from getting one for other future injuries, but it leaves me to bear the cost of Remy’s upcoming surgery and recovery.

An abridged version of the Sarah & Rembrandt saga:
In May of 2016, in a dorm room in Ohio, I saw the dog rescue my family had adopted from before post a little black puppy who looked like he was wearing a bow tie.

This photo to be exact:

I immediately sent the link to my family commenting how he looked like he had a little bow tie on and he deserved to be given a regal name. Something like Rembrandt, and you could call him Remy for short.

A few weeks later, I graduated college and moved back home to California. The next day I find myself in the car to go pick up this puppy. Somehow my family had taken my suggestion and run with it, and I was adopting Remy. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I was ready for a puppy. Yeah he was cute but he would be so much work, and I was a rudderless 21-year-old with no job lined up.

Nevertheless, Remy came home with us. He kept me up HOWLING and CRYING for three nights straight. Despite this, I fell in love with him. He became my constant companion, and we spent the summer having fun and figuring things out while I worked a part-time job.

In the fall I got a job offer I couldn’t refuse…
… In Boston.

I had to go. But my pup couldn’t come with me. I made my mom and dad promise to look after him and bought a one-way flight to a state I’d never been to, hoping that I was making the right decision.

In March of 2017, I came home for the first time since moving. Remy knew me the instant I walked in the door and he lept on my shoulders to kiss me.

I knew then I couldn’t live without him again. I worked with my parents on a plan. Remy got his own one-way plane ride to Boston the next month.

For the next 3 years, Remy was a city boy. We explored the east coast and went on so many walks around one of the coolest cities.

In 2020, like a lot of people, I realized that my family was beyond important to me. And living on the east coast meant they were 3,000+ miles away. And so a new plan was born. In September of 2020, during the dark times, my dad flew out to Boston. I rented a moving truck, we packed up everything but the furniture which found new homes and we convoyed west with Remy.

8 days of driving ahead, Dad and I figured, “if we’re driving east coast to west, might as well stop at some cool places along the way.”

How many dogs can say they’ve been to Niagara Falls, Devil’s Tower, and Yellowstone? Or 16 states and counting? This one can!

(Sideways photos as the cropping on this app is strange)

Remy proved to be the best travel buddy in the world. He perfected road napping and knew it was time to wake up when the car was below 40mph as it meant we were getting off the highway.

According to his doctor’s note, he’s my Emotional Support Animal, but he’s so much more than that.
He’s the reason I left my apartment twice a day every day even when I was deeply depressed.
He was my rock when my heart was shattered and he was right there with me when we fell in love again.
He’s always there with some stupid look on his face to make you laugh, and he’s a ridiculous cuddle bug. (Seriously, he loves being the little spoon.)
In the years since moving back to the west coast, we have only gotten closer, if that was even possible.

To say Remy is family is an understatement.
He is my heart and soul.

By supporting this gofundme you help me ensure that my baby boy has a full and active life for as many years as I can try to give him. Dog ACL surgery is not cheap and the vets all said if one goes the other is close behind… I will be going forward with whatever the surgeon says we need to do; I won’t bat an eye at the cost because anything is worth it for Remy.

Our $5,000 goal is a rough estimate at this point, and I expect that will go higher if anything is complicated.

Any contributions here are deeply appreciated and will go 100% toward Remy’s surgery(s), recovery and associated vet bills.

Can’t contribute for any reason? Sharing this gofundme is just as helpful!

I will post updates here and answer any questions anyone has.

Thank you for any and all support.

All our love,
Sarah and Remy
