Remote Possibilities — Columbia College Chicago student film

As student filmmakers, we're excited to bring a unique short film to life — a story that asks, “Who decides what is urgent?” In a world that constantly tells us to prioritize career and productivity, our main character, Apple, chooses both her work life and her relationship with her mother.

Logline:
A young tarot reader juggles an anxious client and her mom’s frantic search for the tv remote that leads to a fate-twisting mix-up.

Genre: Comedy Drama

Writer's Statement:
Although our protagonist is good at her profession (tarot reading), she uses those skills in a comedically irresponsible way that challenges the expectations of those around her — especially Bob, who has a completely different view of death. Their dynamic is compelling to us because it highlights how our fears and priorities can clash in unexpected, sometimes humorous ways.

This project is deeply personal and inspired by the question of what we choose to prioritize when everything feels important. Apple’s world is one where her mother’s demands are just as urgent as her client’s spiraling sanity, and we hope viewers will reflect on what they would do in her shoes.

What Your Support Will Help Us With!
With your support, we can provide hot meals for our dedicated crew and talent of 25 people during our three days of production, as well as snacks and drinks to keep everyone energized. We will also be able to secure a location for our interior shots, build a tent for our tarot card reader, and bring authenticity and heart to the film.

Your support will make a real difference in helping us create a meaningful and memorable film. Any contribution, big or small, brings us closer to sharing this story with the world. Thank you for believing in student filmmakers and helping us make this project possible!

He has led two BFA thesis films as a line producer and post-production supervisor, strengthening his skills in organization, collaboration, and post workflow management. While this marks his first time producing a school project, he previously produced the independent short film True Spirit.

Tyler was immediately drawn to this project after Vy’s pitch, recognizing its compelling blend of comedy and drama. He is excited to collaborate with a talented team and help bring this story to life. As his final project before graduation, this film represents a meaningful culmination of his growth as a filmmaker.

Klaire (Director of Photography)
Born and raised in the exurbs of Minnesota, Klaire Anderson has been making short films for 4 years. It is her second-to-last semester at Columbia College Chicago, where she will graduate next December.

While experienced with personal projects, Remote Possibilities will be Klaire’s first school-affiliated film as the Director of Photography, and she is looking forward to the exciting challenge. Remote Possibilities will be a quirky story with textured and colorful lighting. To get our short film to the screen, your help is just as crucial as our hard work! Thank you :)

Ameenah (Editor)
Ameenah Starks-McMillian is the editor for Remote Possibilities. She is a senior at Columbia College Chicago, set to graduate this year. Editing is her passion and what she loves most about filmmaking!

Last semester, she shot and edited her own documentary and short film. In Fall 2024, she co-edited for an interview-based project and recorded sound for a short film. More recently, sheworked as a technical and assistant director in television production projects.

She is excited to be a part of Remote Possibilities because she truly believes that editing is where the story comes to life. She can’t wait to help shape how the story unfolds!

Isabela (1st AD)
Isabela Mejia is a senior filmmaker and social media coordinator from Burbank, California. Her passion stems from recording and editing lip sync music videos with her brothers and cousins at birthday parties on an iPhone 5c, which later drove her to pursue a BA degree in Film and TV Production along with a double minor in Social Media & Digital Strategy and Sports Communication at Columbia College Chicago. She is most fulfilled by bringing a smile to others through her works of media.

Tinto (Production Sound Mixer)
Tinto Tran is a filmmaker and location sound mixer from Hanoi, Vietnam, currently studying Film and Television at Columbia College Chicago. After nearly a decade of making films, his focus has shifted toward sound, driven by a belief in its power to shape emotion and story, especially on sets where it is often neglected.

At Columbia, he served as Producer and First Assistant Director on A Leaf From The Moon, the first BFA thesis film in the school’s history to be produced across both Vietnam and the United States. He has also worked as a documentary editor for Art Vietnam Gallery in Hanoi. Tinto now works as a location sound mixer and boom operator, combining technical precision with musical sensitivity, and aims to record stories across diverse communities in Vietnam and the U.S.

Veronica (Production Designer)
Veronica is very excited to bring the world of Remote Possibilities to life. She wants to focus on setting the scene and adding life to these funky characters.
