On October 13, 2010, I returned home from my overnight shift as a registered nurse to find my 20 year old son, Patrick, had passed away in his sleep. So began our devastating and unrelenting nightmare of losing our only son. I had taken Patrick the day before his death to the Emergency Room. Something just did not seem quite right but instead of keeping him overnight, as I requested, he was discharged. With my husband home with him and Patrick's assurance that he was fine, I went to work. The tragedy is that Patrick was emerging from a long period of struggling with low self esteem, bullying and chronic migraine headaches. After an extensive search, we had finally found a compassionate Doctor at a major medical center in Dallas who was able to treat his headaches and he was finally pain free. In addition, a couple of months before his death, Patrick had been accepted at Naropa University in Boulder Colorado for the Fall 2011 semester where he planned to study English and creative writing. He was a talented and gifted writer who read voraciously. Attending Naropa had been his dream for several years. After his death, we traveled to Boulder and scattered his ashes in a secluded spot overlooking the campus. To honor his memory, we established a scholarship in his name, the Patrick Tahu Memorial Scholarship and we committed to building a small meditation garden on campus. We have been making payments on his scholarship since his death, however circumstances have arisen that make it impossible for us to continue. We are seeking to raise $25,000 which would completely fund the endowment thereby allowing Naropa to award a small scholarship in Patrick's memory indefinitely as well as allow construction to begin on a small garden. We would also be able to travel to Naropa in May for commencement. This would have been the year Patrick graduated. Patrick was a gentle soul who would have loved helping another student fulfill their dream of attending Naropa University. There is no better way to honor his memory.
