Remembering Tom Newton Legacy Fund

Tom Newton, retired Camosun College Carpentry instructor, has passed away.

It is with heavy hearts that we convey that after a battle with cancer, Tom Newton passed away on April 7th. His wife Marie and sons Nick and Alistair were with him.

For over 20 years, Tom was an inspiration to hundreds of Camosun Carpentry apprentices. A passerby was just as likely to hear raucous laughter coming from his classes, he having told one of his famous self-deprecating stories, as they were to find him staying after hours to help students in the classroom or shop. Former students would often drop by the college to say hello to ‘Tommy’ and acknowledge his contribution to their career.

Tom’s role as a mentor and leader of fellow instructors cannot be understated. He always had time to help his colleagues with anything from computer issues to Building Code interpretation to technical aspects of construction. (He also had a great party house, site of several staff gatherings and music jams, Tommy on blues harmonica).

Tom’s leadership went beyond the classroom. He served two terms as the Chair of the Carpentry Articulation Committee during a time of significant changes to the provincial curriculum. He helped institute the royalty system to fund the development and improvement of learning resources for all trades.

Tom was quietly and justifiably proud of his recent work in Bella Coola. Over a three-year span, he traveled to the community each fall to bring apprentice training and education to the Nuxalk Nation. He led a cohort of apprentices through to the successful completion of their Red Seal. He would credit the hard work of the students. However, they would not have achieved the standard without Tom’s dedication.

Tom’s presence and influence in the Carpentry department will continue for years. His many teaching aids, models, and work sheets are in daily use. Most importantly, his dedication to students and their learning is shared by the entire department.

After his retirement in April of 2020, Tom spent some time in his workshop, worked on a few small construction projects and plowed through a stack of books with his voracious appetite for reading.

He is gone too soon. We will miss him terribly.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to help establish a bursary to commemorate Tom’s legacy. It will be awarded to students who make contributions to other’s learning.

You can help to make sure that Tom is remembered by contributing to this fund to establish a bursary in Tom's name. Please give in his honour and know that you are going to make a difference in the life of a deserving student.
