Tariq was a beloved son, brother and friend who was tragically taken from us in a sudden and senseless act of gun violence in Oakland. This tremendous loss has devastated our family and left an immeasurable void in the many communities and lives that Tariq has touched through his love and service.
Those who had the honor of knowing Tariq bore witness to his larger than life spirit and his passion and excitement for being of service to others. He lived a life of purpose, generosity and unwavering commitment to deeply loving and building up the various communities that he belonged to. He selflessly dedicated his time and energy to creating green spaces and sustaining community gardens and farms across the country. He overwhelmingly believed in the power of stewarding the land to heal, nourish and connect us all – he lived that belief every day.
His big heart has been an inspiration to everyone around him. He returned from Jamaica less than a month before his passing, where he spent weeks providing mutual aid and helping to rebuild homes and farms after the devastation of Hurricane Melissa. Even far from home, he showed up fully – offering his labor, compassion, solidarity and love to all those in need. This is who Tariq was at his core: someone who moved in purpose towards love and service. His passing has left a vast emptiness in the hearts of many, but his lived impact is immeasurable and has profoundly impacted all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with or witness Tariq.
I am raising funds to support my mother and father with unexpected expenses and legal fees during this unimaginable time. Any and all contributions are welcomed to help ease this burden and honor a life taken far too soon. Donating and sharing this page means more than words can express.
Thank you for holding our family in love and solidarity.
