Remembering Summer Medford

To Friends and Family of the Medfords:

Please view the beautiful Celebration of Summer,  featuring special moments with Summer, her family and friends.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the tragic passing of one of our brightest lights, Summer Medford, after her long and very brave battle with Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (SJIA). A beautiful daughter and granddaughter, adored sister and niece, and admired best friend.  Summer was a 14-year old, rising 10th grader, and Crossroads lifer who loved school; she was a straight-A student who particularly enjoyed Art and English, and was known for helping her friends do their homework.

Summer was strong, determined, optimistic, and ambitious. She brought love, sunshine, a smile that would light up a room, and a compassion for everyone she touched. She never complained and did not let her illness prevent her from fully participating in cherished family events, Crossroads school life, spending time with her friends and classmates, or dancing to the latest TikTok craze.

Many of you have asked how you can support the Medfords while honoring Summer. As you may know, these precious homegoing events are expensive, and payment is due immediately. Any financial contribution that you can make to support the family will help them immensely and be appreciated forever. No amount is too small (or too big). All overflow funds will be used to help pay Summer’s mounting medical and hospital bills which are astronomical. Her father’s employer provides medical insurance; however, the insurance has limits and will not cover all of Summer’s medical expenses, including the expenses incurred over the past five years. Any amount that you are willing to give today will help the Medfords financially get through this trying time without added worries beyond their grief.  This relief will be a significant step toward helping the family become whole again and breathe. If you prefer to mail a check to the Medford Family or if you have a donation of $5,000 or more and would like to use Zelle instead of GoFundMe, please click the "Contact" link below under "Organizer and Beneficiary" to make your request and we will reply with the necessary details for sending your donation.

Summer tirelessly and somehow with a positive deposition, fought her health battles, while every day bringing joy, laughter, and light to all that she touched and beyond.  In 2018, Summer eloquently wrote about her experience living with SJIA, in a UCLA Battling Bruin article entitled, “Battling Bruin: Summer”. Around the same time, Summer was profiled  on the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital website when she was selected to be a “Kid Captain” at a UCLA basketball game. These experiences and so many others demonstrate what an inspiration Summer continues to be to all.

Summer has left a legacy of thoughtfulness, deep caring, and love that will be felt far beyond her immediate circle of influence. As so many have said, she was a real “trooper”. And for all who knew her, Summer was our Superhero!
