The Raymond Richmond Welcome Home Committee is raising funds to honor Technical Sergeant Raymond Carl Richmond, a Marshall County, West Virginia native and World War II airman whose remains were identified after 81 years. Raymond served in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a flight engineer aboard a B-29 Superfortress. During a mission over Tokyo on April 2, 1945, his aircraft was shot down. After being captured, Raymond was taken to Tokyo Military Prison, where he died during the May 25–26, 1945, incendiary bombing raid on the city. For decades, Raymond was listed among America’s missing war dead. Now, after more than eight decades, his identification means he can finally make one last journey home to the community he came from and the people who have never forgotten his sacrifice.
Most transportation and funeral expenses will be covered by the U.S. Army, but this fundraiser will help the committee organize and share community ceremonies worthy of Raymond’s homecoming. Donations will support the creation of fliers, posters, banners, and historical displays and exhibits so that Marshall County can come together to remember Raymond, reflect on his service, and preserve his story for future generations. Any funds left after these efforts will be donated to veterans’ charities in Raymond’s name. Please consider supporting the Raymond Richmond Welcome Home Committee as they work to give Raymond the honor, remembrance, and welcome home he has long deserved.
