Remembering Matt Contreras

It’s with the deepest sadness that I share this. On February 4th, 2023 my beautiful brother, Matthew, unexpectedly and tragically died.

I’ve never known anyone like Matt, and if you knew him, it would be the same for you. He was an incredibly gifted musician, a dedicated EMT, an incredible friend to many, and a son/brother/nephew that is loved dearly by his family–both genetic and found.

There’s so much to share and admire about Matt. Matt was my big brother. My only sibling. We understood each other. I could be 100% myself with him. I admire and love Matt. Everyone loved him. Matt was so intelligent, creative, meticulous, tenacious, sensitive, sassy, and the best son to our dear mom. I sit here with incredible rage and empty confusion having to describe him in the past tense. My heart is broken, utterly, and will never mend.

From my mom, Linda:

"My heart is broken. We were best friends. Matt had a great sense of humor and was so smart–he could take care of any problem put in front of him. We supported and lifted each other up through the hardships in life. Never did I think this would happen to him. Matt was one of my shining stars and I will miss him forever. I pray that we will meet again in God’s glory."

My mom and I are single-handedly dealing with all of the expenses that have come with Matt’s crossing. Matt has been living with my mom, sharing financial responsibilities. She must now move out of their home in the midst of dealing with the loss of her only son. We need to cover his cremation, memorial services, bills related to his passing, and moving expenses for my mom.

I humbly ask that if you are capable of helping to alleviate some of the financial burdens, to please donate. This will also help us to provide a celebration of life that honors Matt’s memory in a way that he deserves, and for us all to say our final goodbyes together.

If you knew my brother I want to thank you for loving him. Please remember Matthew always. Let him live on through us, who were so fortunate to have known him. We were all so blessed.
