Remembering Marcella “Cheekies” Hayes

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of our beloved daughter, Marcella “Cheekies” Hayes, who peacefully left this world in her sleep on June 12, 2025. She was only 9 years old. Marcella was diagnosed with Rett syndrome on her third birthday, yet despite every challenge, she remained the strongest, brightest light in our lives. She filled every room with her contagious smile, her fierce personality, and her deep love for cartoons and her five siblings, who adored her deeply. Marcella was a proud 3rd-grade student at Central Special Elementary School in Edgewater, Maryland. She participated in physical, occupational, and speech therapy multiple times a week, and she underwent several surgeries in hopes of improving her quality of life. Despite it all, she never lost her joy or her fighting spirit.

Just three weeks ago, Marcella suffered a broken arm during physical therapy, an injury that was not reported. We are currently pursuing justice to make sure no other family has to endure this type of negligence. Marcella had recently been selected by the Make-A-Wish Foundation to celebrate her upcoming 10th birthday at Walt Disney World in Orlando this October—a dream she, and we, had been holding on to with hope. Sadly, she will not be here to claim her prize.

We are asking for help during this unimaginable time. Your donations will go toward funeral and memorial expenses, counseling and grief support for her siblings, legal and advocacy efforts related to her injury, and any remaining medical bills and related costs. Marcella was so much more than her diagnosis. She was a warrior, a sister, a daughter, and a radiant soul. Please help us honor her memory and ensure her story is never forgotten.
