Remembering Gilberto Sanchez

Gilberto Sanchez passed away on Monday May 13, 2019 a mile and a half up the Seven Trees Trail in Brand Park while hiking in an area known for its challenging steep inclines. For Gilbert, this was familiar territory. It was home. Just under one year ago Gilbert suffered a massive heart attack; news he did not share with everyone. After surgery and weeks in the hospital he began the slow process of healing. Recovery could not come fast enough for Gilbert and he struggled with his inability to continue training and running. A truly disciplined athlete, he continued carefully monitoring his diet and slowly eased into his old running routines with little regard for the newly prescribed restrictions and limitations. He was determined to overcome the odds and run marathons again!
Gilbert was a devoted, loving husband and supportive father to his three children. His youngest son, Corbin, is a non-verbal adult with autism and requires constant supervision. Gilbert and his wife decided early on to commit to a super healthy lifestyle in order to ensure that they remain vibrant to care for Corbin as long as possible. As Post Commander for the Park Towers Homeowners Association, Gilbert served the upscale Glendale residential community for almost 14 years with the utmost professionalism and integrity. He was highly respected and praised for his friendly, outgoing nature. He took an active interest in the lives of his colleagues and those he served. Counted among his friends are runners, mountain climbers, body builders, Iron Maiden fans, Santana fans, Dodger fans, guitar players, brass players, a bassoonist, automobile collectors, and countless free spirited people from all over the world. On September 26, 2018, Gilbert lost his beloved mother. Just days ago, on Mother's Day, he shared that he had not been able to overcome the heartfelt sadness her loss has brought to him and that the void was still palpable. He was proud of his Mexican heritage and always paid tribute to his rich culture and spoke fondly of his family back home.
Above all things, Gilbert worried for the well being of his wife and children and of what the future would hold for Corbin, who has lived his entire life in the care of his parents. The Sanchez family is emotionally devastated by the loss of Gilbert, who was also the family breadwinner. Without the financial stability that his income provided there will be many transitions and changes to come. Please consider donating generously to assist the family with the medical expenses still lingering from Gilbert's recent heart surgery as well as expenses to cover funeral arrangements and going forward, care to ensure that Corbin is well cared for and attended. With Gilbert gone, the very best way we can honor and serve our friend is to ensure that his wife has the support and resources necessary to continue to care for Corbin for years to come. This is a burden that we can help lighten for the Sanchez family.
