Remembering Gene: A Friend to All

My name is Sele Nathaniel Birchwood, otherwise known as "Coach Nate" to the Canadensis and basketball community. I am the current Director of Basketball at Camp Canadensis. I am putting this together in conjunction with Andrew Mak, CIT '24. With support from Super Senior Boys '24, we hope to bring awareness to our cause and support our dear friend who unexpectedly lost his life.

We are heartbroken to share that our dear friend, counselor, coach, and group leader Eugene Johnson passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 8th, 2025. Eugene, better known as Gene, was a vibrant soul known for his infectious laughter, unwavering kindness, and the way he lit up any room he entered. He was a true friend, a loving counselor, and an integral part of our community.

Gene had dreams and plans that were cut short far too soon. He was passionate about making sure everyone felt included, was always eager to help others, and left behind a legacy of love and generosity. Whether it was through his work in the bunk, coaching a super league, or simply through his presence, Gene touched many lives in his two summers at Camp Canadensis.

We are setting up this GoFundMe to help cover the unexpected funeral expenses and to establish a memorial fund in his name. This fund will support his family's funeral expenses as well as a small memorial in his honor. Your contributions will not only help ease the financial burden during this difficult time but also continue the legacy of kindness and support that Gene embodied.

Every donation, no matter the size, will be a step towards honoring Gene's memory and helping their family during this challenging period.
