In a humbling turn of events, many people have reached out to ask how they can help remember my sweet dad. It has been so comforting knowing that despite his pervasive illness, and how homebound his life has been for so many years, people have emerged from every corner of his past and present to check on us. From calling, to texting, to messaging, to writing and commenting--so many of you have offered the love and support our weary hearts desperately needed. Several have inquired privately about potentially donating to help with the cost of service arrangements, or with additional expenses that accumulated due to my dad’s extensive care needs the past few years.
In considering this fundraiser, it felt almost impossible to come up with a “goal.” We honestly have no idea what to expect or hope for. It feels presumptuous to ask for anything, really. But we wanted to try and we wanted to provide a space for those who wish to give. Dad’s cremation was generously covered by a dear family member, and we have a plot we are pooling our funds to reserve. It is beside a garden with a wide bench and two cherry trees, a Narnia-like lamppost standing guard right behind them. It is perfect. We hope to have a proper gravestone, one with space for my mom’s name when it’s time for her to reunite with him. Beyond this, we are trying to save to help with things around the house that took a back seat to my dad’s care: the roof, the floors, the siding…little annoyances that become big, expensive ones after a while.
If you wish to contribute, please feel free. We are beyond grateful for your love and support regardless. If we make it the goal, or fall short, or go well beyond it, God has always shown and will continue to show His goodness and mercy to us!
