Communities Against Racism Enterprise and Patrick Vernon OBE are organising this fundraiser on behalf of the Clinton McCurbin Memorial Fund Committee
Clinton McCurbin was only 23 when his life was cut short in 1987 during a tragic incident in police custody at a Wolverhampton store. For nearly four decades, his name has been missing from the public memory. That changes now.
We're launching the Clinton McCurbin Memorial Campaign to honour his life, call for truth, and bring healing to a community still seeking justice.
We are seeking to raise £20,500 to create a lasting legacy for Clinton—one that recognises his story as part of Black British history.
- A blue plaque to be installed in Dudley Street, Wolverhampton, marking where Clinton lost his life
- Costs associated with planning permissions, plaque design, production, and installation
- A public unveiling event and remembrance gathering in February 2027
- Education, arts, and community programming tied to Clinton’s story and the issue of deaths in custody
A digital storytelling archive is also in development to collect and share oral histories, documents, and creative responses to Clinton’s story — a living memorial to lives lost in state custody.
Every donation brings us one step closer to justice and healing. We invite you to stand with Clinton’s family, friends, and community. Help us show that his life mattered—and that the movement for truth and recognition is just beginning. Please donate and share this fundraiser to keep Clinton’s memory alive.
The Clinton McCurbin Memorial Committee is organised by CARE (Communities Against Racism Enterprise), led by Ruth South (CEO and Founder) and Esther Douglas (Co-Founder), with Professor Patrick Vernon OBE serving as the elected Chairperson of the committee.
