My name is Jean Wertheim. My husband, Mark Wertheim, and I were long time friends of Bill Downing and his late wife Heather Snow Downing. Bill Downing passed away unexpectedly on June 21, 2025. He left behind his two children, Freya and Willy and his partner Ellen Moore.

Bill lived his life with purpose. In addition to his wonderful family, he worked hard for a cause he believed in: the legalization of marijuana in Massachusetts. There have been many articles published about him and his legacy as an activist. He was a leader in the movement and a fearless trailblazer.

I visited Bill‘s family on June 22, 2025 at their home. I saw devastation, confusion and overwhelming grief. This family of three had lost their leader. To quote from his son Willy, “He always knew what to do“.
