Remember Lottie: A Mother's Unmarked Grave

Hi there! This GoFundMe has been started to gather donations to purchase a headstone for Charlotte “Lottie” Sherwood - Mother to Andrew Lang who passed away in 1898 at just 5 years old. Andrew was Lottie’s only child. Her then-husband, John Lang, died in 1919. Lottie remarried afterward, becoming a Sherwood. Having no other children of her own, Lottie was buried in an unmarked grave in 1953 beside her first husband, John, and their son they shared together. - For 72 years she’s rested in an unmarked grave.

I was encouraged by my favorite Facebook group, “Cemetery Enthusiasts,” to create this GoFundMe to help raise the money to purchase her a headstone.

My boyfriend and I went to the cemetery last weekend and discovered the graves of a father and son. We cleaned up their resting places and left flowers and a windmill. The son, Andrew, passed away at just five years old, in 1898, and his father died in 1919.

After we finished weed-eating and tidying up Andrew’s grave, I asked my boyfriend to clear around John’s grave—and look what he uncovered: a beautiful tribute to a beloved husband!

The whole time I was standing there, I kept wondering where Andrew’s mother was buried. So, I looked her up on Find A Grave and found out she was close by. I asked the cemetery volunteers to help me locate her exact spot. To my surprise, I discovered I had been standing right on her grave the entire time, filming my boyfriend cleaning up her husband’s and child’s graves. She’s resting right beside John, in an unmarked grave.

Now, I’m searching online for an affordable headstone so she’ll never be forgotten. I’m planning to start saving up to buy her a nice one—because she truly deserves it. She passed away in 1953 and for 72 years she’s been in an unmarked grave!

My boyfriend did an incredible job restoring the beauty of this father’s and son’s resting place. I’m so grateful that he doesn’t mind going to cemeteries with me and helping uncover the forgotten beauty hidden by time.
