Remee Needs Help
Donation protected
Hey gang! I'm writing here on behalf of my dear friend Remee Klos. (She would do it herself, but she needs freakin' wrist surgery on both hands, and who wants to type with that going on, amirite??)
First things first: THANK YOU. You are amazing. And generous. And thoughtful. And sexy (I can just tell).
Here's the lowdown: Remee will undergo double wrist surgery within six months -- first one, and then the other as soon as she is able. The original corrective surgeries on her wrists from her teenage years were a temporary fix, and damanged wrists are not much use to a talented, dynamic bartender (and human) like our Remee. The past 20 years of use demand a more serious round of surgeries, which we hope will eliminate daily bone-on-bone pain and slow down the arthritis that is plagueing her far too young.
Remee expects to lose about 6 months of her annual income to the surgeries and recoveries. For a professional whose job infrequently offers healthcare, and less frequently offers paid time off, that is virtually an eternity. If you can imagine losing half of your annual income, you are coming close. Now add a bill for costly, painful surgery to that tally.
Ouch.
Oh, think it can't be worse? It totally can. As Remee prepared for her first surgery, the sewage pipe under her home broke, demanding immediate replacement. Because Philadelphia infrastructure is such a joy, that requires breaking the floor in the basement, destroying the bathroom and the concrete to the street to dig it up, and replacing said pipe. Then replacing the existing concrete and tile.
UPDATE: Remee is 3 weeks post-op this week (4/1), with 6 more weeks in a cast. It has that new cast smell (she swears!) Up next: 4 weeks of PT. Happily, our friends at Medicaid picked up the tab for her 2-hour blackout at NYU Langone Surgical Center while highly trained professionals (none of which looked bad in scrubs, or so she recalls...) reconfigured her left wrist. So in addition to a new sewer pipe, she is already the proud owner of 3 new screws, and may have had parts of and entire bones and nerves removed. (From Remee: "Science. Blows my fucking mind." Me, too, girl. Me, too.)
Anything that you can contribute will go directly to making our Remee's life better during this incredibly challenging time -- and making sure she has working plumbing while she convalesces, which is not a luxury but a necessity.
We are so grateful for your generosity, and so eager to see you soon to share smiles and convalescence. And a shiny new basement floor, and several medically fascinating screws.
My Best,
Jessica L.
