At age 3, Mason was diagnosed with Dyskeratosis Congenita , a rare genetic disorder which prevents the formation of bone marrow. Mason received a bone marrow transplant at the age of 4, and a liver transplant at the age of 9. With each transplant, and many times in-between, he and his family had to rush and relocate to specialty hospitals for testing, monitoring, treatment and recovery. With his bone marrow transplant alone, they spent 9 months at Boston Children’s Hospital. He was placed on a feeding tube at age 8, in a wheelchair at age 9, and most recently was placed on oxygen 24/7.

During each of these extremely trying times, Mason’s parents had to take extended time off from work, causing financial hardship and placing them deeply in debt.

A few weeks ago, Mason’s condition deteriorated once again resulting in him becoming dangerously weak, requiring the family to relocate to UVA children’s hospital for more monitoring and testing. This time, Mason was given a terminal diagnosis and further preventative treatment measures were placed on hold. His case was transferred from UVA hospital care to Hospice care, and plans were made for him to return home and begin receiving palliative (comfort) care for the remainder of his life. While being transferred from the hospital to home, Mason, just 12 years old, passed away.

I am starting this Go Fund Me to help his family during this extremely difficult time. All funds will go towards Mason’s funeral and memorial services, past due medical bills, and help cover their cost of living for the time they’ve had to take off during his most recent hospital stays. My hope is their financial stress can be relieved during this time of funeral planning and grieving, and that Mason’s family can have a fresh start and some financial stability moving forward.

Through all of this loss and trauma, the family has remained positive and optimistic, always trying to focus on the blessings and lessons this tragic situation has given them, as well as those around them. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of help and a fresh start. I know they will turn this loss into something greater and help other families struggling with the same types of challenges in the future.
