On Tuesday, September 6, 2017, Hurricane Irma--the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded--rampaged across the Caribbean. The US Virgin Islands, home of Virgin Islands National Park, were hit directly by the storm. The island of St. John, where much of the Park staff lives and works, was devastated.
Trapped in the middle of the disaster were friends who tell the stories of the US Virgin Islands--the National Park Service Interpretive staff. This small group of five dedicated NPS employees has had their lives forever changed. At least 1 has confirmed that their home has been destroyed, along with everything inside. The others have also experienced immense impacts as well. All will need time and help to move forward.
We can help them start to rebuild their lives. Help us in supporting them to get back on their feet. All money collected will be distributed according to their needs, and/or their desires to have the money have the greatest impact on the island. We will work directly with family and close friends to get the funding where it needs to go as quickly as possible - there are immediate needs. Our initial goal is $20k US, but could definitely expand.
The runners of this campaign remain committed to the security of your donations. We are friends of one of the rangers, Emily Guss. Logistically, Andrew West (named on this campaign as the starter), will distrubute the funds via paypal or other wire transfer, to be distributed to the rangers, based on their needs at the time of funds withdrawal. If a ranger declares they are doing better than expected, or wishes us to attend to the needs of others first, we will donate their share to one of the most trusted USVI based charities at this time – St. John’s Rescue. No matter what happens, we will update our donors along the way about where their funds are going.
