Do you still have your job? Did you get a stimulus check that feels like a bonus? Let's share some of our good fortune and stimulus money with people who are having a tougher time.

I work with parents in Richmond, CA who are working to improve their own educations and their children's.  But many are now struggling with layoffs and worse and no opportunity to receive unemployment or stimulus benefits because of immigration status or other reasons. Often some family members are US citizens but because one family member isn't documented, no one in the family is eligible for benefits, due to a ridiculous and unfair rule.

I'm hoping we can help several families get through these next few months. These are families I know and know their situations. I'm starting small with just 3 families but if we can raise more, I'd love to expand it because I know there are others in our program in the same boat.

In one case, the family is homeless and living in a van. The single mom lost her long term  job and home several months ago and has only been able to find lower paid work as a home health aide. She would like to move to the Central Valley where rents are lower and she might be able to support her three kids, ages 10 to 16, with a real roof over their heads. She needs some seed money to get back into housing. Let's see if we can raise $3000 to help her family make this change.

In another family, both parents are unable to work right now. The mom worked cleaning houses, but her work has disappeared. They have 3 kids, a teen boy who loves poetry, a younger boy who loves soccer and a spitfire of a little five year old girl. Let's see if we can raise the equivalent of what they'd have received if they were eligible for stimulus money: $3700.

In the third family, one parent works construction and was laid off for a month. It looks like he'll be able to work soon but they are out a month of income and can't cover their rent. They have four kids, including two young, special needs twins and two older girls. If it weren't for the rule about mixed immigration status families, the citizen members of the family would have gotten $3200 in stimulus money and they'd be OK financially. Let's see if we can help them with that amount.
