Anyone who knows Steve, knows that he is a “give you the shirt off of his back” kind of guy. Always willing to lend a hand. Now it is him who is need of your help.
In Spring of 2021, while on a family vacation, Steve began struggling to breathe. The trip was cut short, and he went home to see his his doctor. He learned his emphysema and COPD was worsening and was prescribed a new inhaler and purchased a nebulizer. These relatively simple treatments seemed to do the trick for a while.
But this was the beginning of Steves battle for his life.
Just before Thanksgiving 2021 Steves lungs were in rough shape and began filling with fluid that ultimately turned into multiple battles with pneumonia. Multiple exhausting hospital stays.
It was discovered that his lungs were riddled with blood clots one of the times he was admitted and treated with blood thinners and upon his release.
Steve, a man of pride had to accept the fact that he would now be oxygen dependent.
Even through this battle Steve continued working as a handyman, which he has done for 22 years in the local mobile home communities, to keep some sense of normalcy and to continue to provide income to the household. The larger projects were becoming difficult for him to handle but he continued doing whatever he could to help his customers.
During these trying times, a mass was discovered in Steve’s already struggling lungs. Cancer was the likely culprit.
A scan of the lungs confirmed our biggest fear…
Steve was dealing with a malignant mass and the invasion of the cancer in a lymph node.
But Steve stayed strong, journaling to his wife in the hospital to pass the time. Unfortunately, his lungs were too weak from near constant pneumonia infections to do a biopsy and begin aggressively treating the cancer.
Steve was left waiting in limbo…
Waiting to learn his ultimate fate…
His condition recently worsened to the point where accepting defeat and starting end of life care was suggested. Steve was ready to make the choice to say goodbye to the love of his life, goodbye to his family, his loved ones, his friends and his life.
Family was called in and they began to say goodbye.
But then a miracle happened. Prayers began to be answered.
By the grace of God, Steve’s condition has improved just enough so that he is able to undergo a biopsy.
We are currently here in the hospital waiting for this procedure to be done. The results are expected by Monday, 2/28.
While beating this cancer into remission is unlikely given the fragile state of his lungs, treatment can help shrink the mass enough to prevent the recurring pneumonia, minimize Steve’s pain and most importantly: buy him more time to make memories with his loved ones.
Steve could get up from that hospital bed and get back to work, he would. This Go Fund Me is a way to relieve Steve’s unnecessary anxiety of how he is going to pay for his treatment so he can focus on fighting the toughest battle of his life.
With the total loss of income, this fundraiser will cover the following costs: an Oxygen Cpap so his oxygen can be supported at home, oxygen tanks so he can be transported to and from treatment, a home health aid so he can continue with IV antibiotics, the (currently unknown) cost of the cancer treatment protocol the oncologist will prescribe after his biopsy results are read, and all other uninsured and underinsured costs that may arise.
Steve would never ask for help, so his family will do it for him.
He has given so much to all of us, so now we ask if you can return it to him.
We sincerely thank anyone who takes the time to read this, share it, pray for Steve, and/or make a donation.
