My name is Monica, and I was born in Colombia. I am 50 years old and have witnessed my share of hardships, but nothing compares to the devastation my family and community are facing right now in Montería, Colombia. The Rio Sinú has flooded the city, and over 50 families have lost their homes. In some areas, the water is up to chest level and continues to rise as the rain shows no sign of stopping. Roads and bridges have been destroyed, making it nearly impossible to bring in supplies or leave the city. My mother’s home, which is still dry for now, has become a refuge for family and friends who have nowhere else to go. Every day, they face the uncertainty of rising waters and dwindling resources. My family is constantly sending me videos of the situation—my niece’s home is completely destroyed, and I have seen my own relatives walking through streets where the water is past their waists, trying to reach their homes to save a few personal belongings. In Colombia, most people live paycheck to paycheck and do not make a lot of money, buying only enough food for a few days at a time. With grocery stores running low and access to the city so limited, it is critical that we help them prepare for the difficult weeks and months ahead. I feel brokenhearted and powerless being far away in the United States, safe in my own home while so many I know—and thousands I don’t—are struggling to survive. I have seen countless videos of people crying in desperation, surrounded by devastation and loss. It feels apocalyptic, and I cannot just sit and watch them suffer.
