Relief for Immigrant Workers in Service Industries

Hi everyone, hola a todos,
I spent last year teaching at St. Jerome H.A.N.D.S. Community Center in the Bronx. St. Jerome H.A.N.D.S., based out of a church, aims to support immigrant families through educational initiatives, job training, legal services and pantry services. In this small church, the center supports over 350 students and their families.
I taught computer classes. My students were bus drivers, line cooks, waiters or construction workers. Most of my students left their homes in search for economic and political stability. Some had only completed a few years of elementary education. Only a handful spoke some English, most were undocumented and all worked extremely long hours when they were not in class. Once a week, they would come to class and learn how to use Word, Powerpoint and Excel, how to adjust their resumes, or how to put together presentations. One of my students had just opened a restaurant and wanted to put together a book of recipes.
Today, because of COVID-19, several of these students are left without jobs. Across the country, immigrants and undocumented workers will not receive the same support as others. The New York Times recently published an article on these workers, stating, "Unlike their employers, undocumented workers cannot collect unemployment or benefit from a government bailout. They are part of the bustling informal economy, typically paid cash and off the books for the essential work they do. Without paid sick leave, remote work capability and access to jobs, they become uniquely vulnerable."*
That's why we need your help. Like my own students, the majority of the immigrants that depend on the community center are members of service industries and have lost their jobs because of COVID-19. I'm working with St. Jerome H.A.N.D.S. to distribute direct financial relief to the many immigrant families who have been laid off and are left without any income. 100% of proceeds will go to these families. Edgar and I will provide this relief in the form of cash grants to be distributed by the community center. In addition to providing relief, we will provide one-pagers prepared by Qualitas, an organization that provides financial education to immigrants. These flyers will provide additional information on how to navigate the current situation and resources to reach out to.
I grew up in New York City as the daughter of Mexican immigrants. I have spent my entire life around immigrant workers and I have seen the vital role they play in society. They are being hit disproportionately hard by this crisis and they cannot reach out for the same resources that others will receive. Please, please help out in anyway you can. Any amount will make a difference.
When this is all over, we can get together with some tequila and celebrate the strength of our community to work together and overcome this.

El año pasado lo pasé dando clases en el centro comunitario “St. Jerome H.A.N.D.S.” en el Bronx. Basado en una iglesia en el barrio, el centro busca apoyar a familias migrantes a través de iniciativas educativas tales como cursos y servicios legales y la donación de despensas. En esta pequeña iglesia, el centro comunitario apoya a más de 350 estudiantes y a sus familias.
Estuve a cargo de la clase de computación. Mi grupo consistía de choferes de camiones, cocineros, meseros, albañiles, etc. La mayoría de mis estudiantes dejaron sus hogares en busca de estabilidad económica y política. Algunos apenas lograron completar algunos años de la escuela primaria. Muy pocos de ellos hablaban inglés, casi todos eran indocumentados y todos trabajaban largas jornadas laborales cuando no estaban en clase. No obstante, una vez por semana, asistían a la clase de cómputo para aprender a usar herramientas como Word, Powerpoint y Excel. Aprendían a mejorar sus currículums y a hacer presentaciones digitales. Uno de mis estudiantes incluso abrió su propio restaurante y quería crear un recetario.
Actualmente, a causa del COVID-19, muchos de estos estudiantes se quedaron sin trabajo. A través de todo el país, trabajadores migrantes e indocumentados no recibirán el mismo apoyo que otros más afortunados. El New York Times recientemente publicó un artículo referente a este grupo de trabajadores, el cuál citaba: “Contrario a sus empleadores, trabajadores indocumentados no pueden recibir ningún tipo de pensión de desempleo o ayuda por parte del gobierno. Ellos pertenecen a una economía informal, normalmente recibiendo pagos en efectivo y por fuera del sistema a cambio su trabajo. Sin ningún tipo de beneficios como incapacidad pagada o trabajo remoto, representan especialmente vulnerables.”
Es por eso que hoy necesitamos ayuda. Como mis estudiantes, la mayoría de los migrantes que pertenecen al centro comunitario son miembros de industrias de servicio y hoy no tienen trabajo a causa del COVID-19. Estoy trabajando en conjunto con el centro de St. Jerome H.A.N.D.S. para distribuir alivio económico a muchos migrantes y a sus familias, los cuales actualmente se encuentran desempleados sin ningún tipo de ingreso monetario. El 100% de lo que se reciba irá directamente a estas familias. Adicional al apoyo financiero, brindaremos folletos realizados por la asociación Qualitas, que ofrece educación financiera a migrantes. Éstos contendrán información sobre cómo hacer frente a la situación actual y a dónde acudir.
Siendo hija de migrantes Mexicanos y crecida en Nueva York, he pasado toda mi vida rodeada de trabajadores migrantes y he vivido de cerca el papel vital que este grupo de gente juega en la sociedad. Están siendo afectados de una manera desproporcionadamente negativa por esta crisis y, lamentablemente, no pueden tener acceso a los mismos recursos que otros grupos. Por favor, con el corazón en la mano hoy les pido ayuda. Cualquier monto hará una diferencia.
Cuando todo esto termine, nos juntaremos a brindar con tequila y celebrar el gran poder de nuestra comunidad. Miraremos atrás y sonreiremos por haber sobrepasado este obstáculo con unidad.
