Relief Assistance for Malawi

On 12th March 2023, a tropical depression formed in Australia in the Indian Ocean and traveled into the Mozambique Channel, where it intensified, developing into a severe Tropical storm Freddy on Sunday 13th March 2023. Mozambique and Malawi on Monday were counting the cost of Tropical Storm Freddy, which killed more than 200 people, injured scores, and left a trail of destruction as it ripped through southern Africa for the second time in a month over the weekend.

Malawi's damage and loss of life are unclear, as the power supply and phone signals were cut off in some parts of the affected area. The injuries were from falling trees, landslides, and flash floods. We have recorded over 190 people dead in about seven councils, with Blantyre city having the highest, with 85 dead and hundreds of people in the town alone hospitalized.

Cyclone Freddy has affected over 60,000 people and displaced over 19,000 people from their homes. Malawi’s government has declared a “state of disaster” in the country's southern region. The country’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, “has noted with grave concern the devastation that Cyclone Freddy is bringing to most districts in Malawi’s Southern region.

This mutual aid is being sent to coordinate rapid cash assistance for relief to families within the jurisdictions of the seven affected municipalities through the social welfare task forces of the Anglican Council of Malawi.

A preliminary analysis of the current needs of the affected population yielded the following list: Shelter Tarpaulins, plastic sheets, construction kits, tents, beddings, kitchen utensils, food items, mosquito nets, lighting, soap, sanitary pads, water storage materials, psychosocial support, children conners in camps, teaching and learning materials, emergency medical supplies.

A coordinated collection of the supplies above will commence as soon as possible and be integrated with national emergency response, as a freight transportation and logistical capacity have been damaged.

Cash donations can also be sent through other liquid remittance apps (mukuru and world remit). Download one of the apps and donate with the message #warmheart$511. Use the National Health Coordinator Louis Ng'oma as your recipient and select mobile transfer to the following numbers:
